Baskin Robbins || Hayley and Chris

Hayley had only half expected Chris to get her chapstick. They weren’t dating yet she knew he’d buy it for her. She squinted her slightly skeptical yet happy eyes at him before taking the chapstick into her hands. “thanks.” she replied squeezing it tightly in her hand as her lips smirked at him. “Should i give you the tattoos now or later?” she asked with a chuckle, only noticing the exhaustiveness in his demeanor. She hoped everything was okay.
Chris shook his head. “Whenever.” He smiled. “As long as we get some ice cream by the end of the day.” He said, sounding more awake and louder than before. “Nevermind.. I’ll definitely take them later.” He concluded as he stood up and waited for Hayley to do the same before going to look at the many ice cream flavors.

With her hair curled and tied loosely to the side of her head, the soles of her shoes squeaking against the floor as Hayley chose a booth in Baskin Robbins. She tugged at her shirt as she awaited chris’ arrival. She wasn’t sure what to expect when seeing him. Confused on what her feelings were towards him, especially since their would be anniversary date was the next day. She shook her head from that thought, jumping a little rummaging through her bag when remembering the tattoos she had gotten him. She gently placed them on the table turning to see Chris walk through the door.
“Hey.” Chris tiredly smiled as he sat down across from Hayley, deciding to talk a bit first before getting ice cream. He hadn’t really gotten any sleep lately; but he wasn’t going to let anybody know that. He dug through his pocket and took the ChapStick out. “Here you go. One strawberry-flavored ChapStick just for you.”

Hayley looked to Chris a little confused but nodded. “yeah. yeah of course.” she said looking around a bit spotting a bench across the street. “Come.” She said softly, taking his hand and walking to the cross walk. She looked to him as they sat down before staring at her boots. The obviously cool wind beginning to pick up a bit. “What do i do?” she asked once again, looking out to the street they had just came from.
Chris took a deep breath when they sat down. “Easy. Just realize you’re not a horrible friend and you’re doing your best to help her get through everything; even if you do get upset with her sometimes, you’re still there for her.” he answered simply. “Next question please.” He requested, smiling somewhat at her.

Hayley sighed as she thought about the question, not realizing she had instinctively intertwined her hand in his as they continued to walk down the street. “i’m just the worst friend ever.” Hayley said after a few minutes. She hadn’t been honest with debby, but she needed to be honest with someone. She stopped walking and looked to him. “Do you know why she brought me to London?” hayley asked softly. She bit her lip, looking down to their hands and shook her head at seeing those words over and over again: …..You need to get over him. Hayley knew chris was already confused, but she needed to tell him. “She told me something, and though i told her i wasn’t upset about it, i really was.” she cleared her throat and looked up to him. “that’s why i’m here with you, but” she sighed as she leaned her head backwards disliking the position she suddenly felt she was in. “she had court and when i saw her just now, she looked so upset.” hayley rambled. “i just don’t know what to do.”
Chris looked at Hayley as she spoke, listening carefully. He shook his head when she said she was a horrible, or the worst, friend, and again when she asked if he knew why Debby brought her to London. “Okay, I’ll probably be able to help you figure things out.” He nodded slightly. “But first, can we find somewhere to sit or something? I mean, you don’t wanna stand in the middle of the sidewalk talking about this stuff, right?” He asked, glancing down at his feet for a moment, still thinking about what Hayley had just told him and how to help her.

Hayley smirked at Chris putting a hand on her hip shaking her head a bit. “Well it is a fancy hotel.” She joked before giving chris a hug. “Shall, we explore london once more?” she asked hooking her arm up with his and leading him out the doors. Even though they weren’t dating Hayley felt truly happy again. Maybe debby was right. Maybe she needed to take things slowly again and remember why she fell in love with him. But even the mention of debby made her feel a little guilty and sad. She sighed as they made it outside and began walking the sidewalks towards their destination. “Debby.” Hayley said knowing chris was wondering what was up.
“Ah, yes please. You know where we’re going though, right? Because I don’t.” Chris chuckled as Hayley led them outside. He looked around for a minute as they walked before looking back at Hayley, who seemed a bit distracted. He nodded his head in understanding when she spoke. “Right.” He sighed, knowing that the two probably fought again. “So what happened?” He asked, unhooking their arms and grabbing her hand instead, not really thinking about it.

After having an interesting time in the hotel with her best friend, she really just couldn’t wait to go out and see that guy she had met only hours before. Though she felt a little bit bad for sneaking out on her friend all of sudden like this. But truth be told, she had upset hayley with her words when they got to London. Hayley didn’t want to start another fight, so as soon as she thought Debby was asleep, hayley slipped on her shoes and beanie grabbing her fanny pack and key, heading quietly out the door. Hayley walked into the lobby of the hotel waiting to meet her friend.
After an extremely long day, Chris was tired. But he didn’t even care at all. He was in London, meeting with Hayley for the second time that day. He had been wandering around until he got a text from Hayley saying to meet her at the hotel. He somehow found his way there and entered the lobby; he spotted Hayley right away. “Hey, stranger.” He said, smiling as he walked over to Hayley. “Fancy meeting you here.”

Hayley looked to chris while he began comparing life to baseball. Letting herself cry just a little bit more because her life was like baseball. She really didn’t know which way to go. Her mind telling her to stay with Chris no matter what happened in the past with his ex. Yet her heart telling her to go because that trust isn’t as strong as it used to be. It was when he told her that is was okay to go back home no matter which way it was. She was confused. She squinted her eyebrows towards him, confusion and worry written all over her face. “What are you trying to say chris?” She squeaked out. She wiped her eyes with her palms as she sat cross legged.
Chris thought about it for a moment; what was he trying to say? “I guess I’m trying to say that you should go whichever way you have to go to get home; or to be happy.” He shrugged, not really knowing what he was talking about anymore. He was just saying everything that came to his mind. “I’m saying that I want you to be happy. Because like you said before, it’s been a while since you last smiled a real smile with me… I don’t know which way you’ll go, but I really hope you’ll go the way that’ll lead you to that real happiness.” After being silent for a moment, Chris chuckled. “I don’t sound like myself at all right now.” He shook his head before looking back up at the clouds as he waited for Hayley to say something.

Of course Hayley was beginning to feel awful for blatantly showing she didn’t trust him. She really was a jealous girlfriend. She pulled her legs closer to her as he mentioned about that audition. She lightly shook her head sighing. “No it’s fine. I’m happy for you.” She said truthfully, forcing her glossy eyes towards him smiling a bit. “I like it.” She kept her smile up until she rested her head on her arms. Still unsure what to do but cry. “Congrats.” She muttered while she licked her upper inner lip as another tear fell.
Chris, still looking down, smiled momentarily. “Thanks.” He said quietly before looking back up. “For everything.” He smiled again until he he turned to see a few tears on her cheek. “Hey, there’s no crying in baseball.” He added before leaning back so he was laying down in the grass and looking up at the clouds. “Have you ever compared baseball with life? They’re kinda similar if you think about it.” Chris mused. “Like, you start out at home. And then you go on to different bases; and sometimes it’s hard to get around to them. But you know you have to because you want to go back home. Because home is where the heart is, right? And… I think you might be stuck trying to get around to another base. Or maybe not.. maybe you’re trying to get back home and you don’t know which way to go.. If you’re just trying to get around to another base, just think of a different way to get there. And if you’re trying to go back home, go whichever way you want; all ways are fine, Hayley.” He finally finished, thinking he was starting to understand Hayley a bit more. “You understand at all?” He asked, now looking back at her and not at the sky.

Hayley kept quiet and nodded, glancing at the picture with hats feeling once again guilty for possibly ruining their relationship. She couldn’t kid herself, they were a cute couple. She chuckled a little bit when he mentioned the sushi. “that was some good sushi.” She rubbed her face as she thought about london. “W-What did you do while i was London?” She asked cautiously, unsure how he’d react. “Were you with her at all?”
Chris rolled his eyes at needing to explain himself and tell her everything. “When you were in London, I worked. I was at the studio in the mornings and I had auditions in the afternoon. When I got home, I slept.” He sighed before continuing. “And yeah, we hung out at that birthday party.” He said again, before remembering something. “And by the way, I obviously nailed one the auditions I had.” He said, smiling and pointing to his haircut. “…Sorry, I just really wanted to add that part.” He apologized almost immediately, the proud smile he had on seconds before was now gone and he was looking down at the grass, somewhat regretting saying that because he knew it wasn’t a very appropriate time.

Hayley rolled her eyes when he asked about the pictures, but she pulled out her phone anyway, scrolling to them and showing them too him. “When were those taken?” she asked as calmly as she could. She shook her head about his comment about her smile. “Do you even know how long it’s been since i’ve genuinely smiled with you?” she asked biting her lip to keep from quivering.
Chris knew that Hayley didn’t fully trust him anymore when she pulled out her phone and showed him the pictures of him and Shanley. He tried to remain calm, even though he was upset and even a little mad. “Uh, the birthday hat one was taken like a week ago or something. And the other one was taken last year; when I was still dating her.” He explained. “Yes, actually. A few weeks ago; when we got sushi. That was also the last time I saw you, well until now, anyways.”
